The Mozarts' marriage seemed to be a happy one. In August 1782 he married Constanze Weber. A year later the Emperor Joseph II commissioned him to write La finta semplice. Mozart composed his first opera, Apollo et Hyacinthus when he was only 11. Though he was and still is considered a genius, he was also tactless, arrogant and had a scatological sense of humour. Mozart's father, Leopold, was an ambitious composer and violinist. Mozart's music embraces opera, symphony, concerto, chamber, choral, instrumental and vocal music, revealing an astonishing number of imperishable masterpieces. His inspiration is often described as 'divine', but he worked assiduously, not only to become the great composer he was, but also a conductor, virtuoso pianist, organist and violinist. Johannes Chrystostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart (1756–1791) was arguably the most gifted musician in the history of classical music.

The interior is similarly chaotic, and Kidd renders all its mouldering glories with a sharp eye, from the “dead mouse curled in a teacup” to the dismembered Barbie doll that Maud imagines as “part of some sort of art installation, like the abstract expressionist shit that splatters the wall and the mug tree lodged in the toilet bowl”. Since his wife’s death, he has gradually allowed himself to descend into squalor and Bridlemere, his sprawling, Grade II-listed townhouse, has become overwhelmed with years of accrued jumble.įrom the outside, it is an imposing place of louring grandeur, even if the garden path is lined with “eviscerated mattresses and abandoned car batteries”. And it’s clear from the start that he does. It’s a tough, thankless job and Maud suspects that it has been given to her because, like Flood, she is Irish and therefore more likely to be able to persuade him that he needs help. Shifting her focus in this second novel from the rural to the urban, Kidd takes us from west Ireland to west London, where careworker Maud Drennan has been tasked with looking after “bedraggled giant” Cathal Flood, the hoarder of the book’s title. I rish author Jess Kidd’s debut Himself was one of the standout titles of 2016, rightly praised for its unique voice and tenor. contributions, even when these should have followed naturally in the storyline. He continually fails to elaborate on non-U.S. However this otherwise superb book is badly let down by the author’s selective American agenda (possibly unconscious and unintentional), which by extension made me doubt other aspects of the storyline. The central event was not as unique as the author implies. This was effectively the biography of Franz Stigler’s war, and all the better for being so. Brilliantly written but with a selective agenda Some politicians and activists saw criminals as a “cancer” that had to be cut away from the rest of black America. Many came to believe that tough measures-such as stringent drug and gun laws and “pretext traffic stops” in poor African American neighborhoods-were needed to secure a stable future for black communities. As Forman shows, the first substantial cohort of black mayors, judges, and police chiefs took office around the country amid a surge in crime. weighs the tragic role that some African Americans themselves played in escalating the war on crime. In Locking Up Our Own, the Yale legal scholar and former public defender James Forman Jr. Today, Americans are debating our criminal justice system with new urgency. An original and consequential argument about race, crime, and the law Waugh read both Gibbon and Spengler while writing his first novel. The title alludes also to the German philosopher Oswald Spengler's The Decline of the West (1918–1922), which first appeared in an English translation in 1926 and which argued, among other things, that the rise of nations and cultures is inevitably followed by their eclipse. The novel's title is a contraction of Edward Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. It is a social satire that employs the author's characteristic black humour in lampooning various features of British society in the 1920s. Decline and Fall is based, in part, on Waugh's schooldays at Lancing College, undergraduate years at Hertford College, Oxford, and his experience as a teacher at Arnold House in north Wales. It was Waugh's first published novel an earlier attempt, titled The Temple at Thatch, was destroyed by Waugh while still in manuscript form.
